Who are you? The Ayurvedic perspective

7 jun 2026 | Ayurveda

We are all born with all three doshas—Vata, Pitta, and Kapha—in our own unique combination. This combination influences our physical appearance, talents, and personality.

Vata, Pitta, and Kapha are neither positive nor negative in themselves. They express positive qualities when in balance and negative qualities when out of balance.

We are not born with one-third of each dosha. Instead, each of us is born with a unique constitution. When we learn to understand our own constitution and the qualities that come with it, we can make choices that support our body and promote naturally good health.

VATA

Vata as the Dominant Constitution

The key word for Vata is movement.

People with a strong Vata constitution often lead active and irregular lifestyles. They are quick in speech and action, lively, imaginative, and often talkative. They tend to use their energy quickly and can become tired easily, often experiencing fluctuating energy levels.

They move quickly and lightly. Money is often spent rapidly and impulsively. They are easily carried away by thoughts and ideas, and it is common for them to lose track of what they were doing as new ideas and impulses constantly arise.

They work quickly and flexibly, are curious, and enjoy trying new things.

Their appetite varies, and they often forget to eat. They need plenty of fluids but frequently forget to drink. They are light sleepers and easily awakened by sounds. In general, they are sensitive to noise.

They speak quickly. In stressful situations they tend to become worried, anxious, and overstimulated. Anxiety, nervousness, and phobias are not uncommon.

The Vata pattern is light, quick, and mobile—like the wind.

They often have a tendency toward constipation and irregular bowel movements.

Dreams commonly involve movement, travel, heights, or frightening situations.

Physical Characteristics of Vata

  • Thin bone structure
  • Unusually tall or short
  • Slim build
  • Difficulty gaining weight

PITTA

Pitta as the Dominant Body Type

Pitta represents transformation and heat. A “Pitta person” is passionate, dynamic, goal-oriented, and colorful. They burn for what they care about.

They move quickly and purposefully. Their lifestyle is often intense, with activities well planned and organized. They work quickly and with clear direction. They make decisions quickly and are natural leaders.

They take in new ideas, but may be skeptical. They speak quickly and have a tendency to interrupt others. They are generally intellectual and analytical.

Fire is energy, and with their strong will and drive, they may have a tendency to override the body’s signals. Burnout can therefore be a risk.

In stressful situations, they can easily become impatient, irritable, and demanding.

They have a strong metabolism and often feel that they “must” eat. They need plenty of fluids. They enjoy challenges and usually have a good appetite for both food and life in general.

They tend to have planned finances and enjoy spending money on food and drink.

They usually have regular bowel movements, with a tendency toward loose stools.

Their dreams are intense, colorful, and often conflict-filled.

Pitta Physique

Medium bone structure, medium body shape, medium weight, and often reddish skin.

KAPHA

Kapha as the Dominant Body Type

The key word for Kapha is stability and structure.

A person with a lot of Kapha in their constitution is often physically and emotionally stable, patient, and grounded. Their body shape is usually robust.

Kapha people generally have a slower nature than the other two types, as well as a slower metabolism. When hungry, they can usually wait. They do not need as much fluid.

They usually prefer life without too many changes and feel best with peace and calm. Their lifestyle is regular and based on steady routines.

They have a pleasant way of being, and they are calm and stable. They are thoughtful and do not rush off when a new idea appears. They work slowly and methodically.

They speak slowly, with a low voice, and do not use too many words. They rarely get angry. In stressful situations, they may easily withdraw.

They use energy and money when needed, but not unnecessarily. They prefer to save.

They usually have regular bowel movements.

Their dreams are peaceful, romantic, and often involve water.

Kapha Physique

Strong bone structure, strong body shape, heavy build, and a tendency to gain weight easily.
